It’s seven feet from my finger to my television. I was able to figure that out with a click of a button, using a digital measuring tool. It doesn’t only measure things, though… it’s far cooler than that! The Smart-Rule Ultrasonic Measuring Tool has six different functions!
The Smart-Rule is a distance measuring device and 6-in-1 multi-function tool. It has a built-in LCD display and laser targeting. The audible confirmation lets you know when the measurement is ready giving you measurements in both feet and meters. It also features a bright LED flashlight and quick release from key ring. Takes 3 Lithium button cell batteries. Features include:
- 6-in-1 Multi-Function Tool
- Distance measuring device
- LCD display
- Measure button with audible confirmation
- Laser targeting
- Feet and meter modes
- Bright LED flashlight
- Emergency flasher
- Laser pointer
- Panic alarm
As you know, your hands may not be steady when you hold something up like this little gadget. So, it is probably best to take measurements a couple of different times, to make sure they’re accurate. I wouldn’t point the laser at anyone, or set off the panic alarm in close range to someone as a joke! There’s a ball-point pen that flips out from the side to write down your measurements… so I guess you’re getting a bonus feature for free!

I’m sitting here showing Wicket the slideshow of images that were gathered from the digital camera that hangs off of his collar. He didn’t seem to be too interested in watching, until he saw pictures of his new rawhide bone. We were checking out pictures taken with Pixie’s new Pet’s Eye View Digital Camera.
Set the timer to record a shot every 1, 5, or 15 minutes and the Pet’s Eye View Digital Camera is good to go. At the end of the day, you can download the shots to your computer and see what your pet did all day. The camera is plug-and-play, so there’s no software to load. Features include:
- 1, 5, 15 minute interval timer
- PC and Mac compatible - true plug-and-play
- 8mb SDRAM internal memory (not expandable)
- Resolution: 640 x 480
- Image capacity: 40 (jpeg)
The battery in the camera charges via USB, and allows you about 1-2 hours of usage out of each charge. The worst thing is that the camera doesn’t come with any instructions - and there aren’t any on the website, either! Sadly, there’s also a proprietary USB cable needed to charge, instead of being able to use a mini-USB.
It is easy to use, for sure. It’s also interesting to see exactly what it is that your pets are up to when you aren’t at home. Are you sure they are just lying around, anxiously awaiting your return?

When you have a glass or mug with condensation on the bottom, you should set it down on a coaster. You don’t want it damaging your furniture, right? If you’re going to use a coaster anyway, why not use a fun LED coaster? The Glowing UFO Drink Coasters are not only functional, they’re also a great conversation starter for your next party!
These drink coasters are designed to not only protect your furniture from condensation rings but also glow with an inner fire that illuminates your drinks. Simple pressure-sensitive pads in the base switch the coaster from blinking, to blinking between individual colors, to steady-on, so you can personalize your alcoholic experience. One coaster per unit purchased, so get as many as you need!
These are clear plastic drink coasters, with six LEDs inside of each of them. You can set them to flash between the red, green and blue lights, or light up all colors at the same time! They’re little LED lights attached to a circuit board, running off of the LR44 batteries. Even if you forget to turn these coasters off and kill the batteries, it’s cheap to replace them. You can buy like a hundred of them for about ten bucks.
I have four of these, because you can’t just have one. You need a full set! And if you allow your company to use glasses without coasters, you’re just crazy! These little things are really well made. They’ve done something to maximize the light that is emitted from your coaster. They’re really bright and the colors are excellent.

To start off this video, I threw out some trivia questions to my chat room. I have the new Aurora Palette made by a company called Banpresto out of Japan. This is a very cool and fun gadget - and even includes glowing lights!!! This is a relaxing interior light that projects an aurora-like light on the ceiling or wall. Along with the colors, it also wavers as if it were a real aurora. It includes a timer function for 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes and works for about twenty hours with four AA batteries.
Banpresto has come up with a way to project the beautiful Northern Lights right on your own ceiling. The Aurora Palette projects an “aurora borealis-like” lighting effect onto your walls or ceiling that will supposedly create a relaxing mood in the room. The projector head can even be angled and swiveled for aiming where the light show hits.
It’s almost like a glowing kaleidoscope of sorts. You can set it on the floor, or even on a desk to point it towards the wall instead of the ceiling. Since it runs on batteries, it’s best to set the timer on the machine so you don’t kill the batteries.
The lights are actually stationary, but you can still make them move around. There’s a little tray inside the machine that rotates. As it moves around, you’ll get the various effects. There’s blue, green and red lights included. Of course, the further away you place the machine from the wall or ceiling, the larger the display will be.
You know I love glowing objects, so you know I’m loving this one. I’m eating it up! If you know of any other devices like this, let me know. I may even potentially make it my own.

I can walk around and pan the camera from side to side, and still the video quality is amazing and clear. There’s virtually no shakiness to it when you use a good stabilizer like the Manfrotto Modosteady.
Manfrotto’s Modosteady Three-in-One is an exceedingly clever–perhaps overly clever–multipurpose camcorder support. Capable of serving as a tabletop tripod, shoulder brace, or counterbalance stabilizer, in theory, the Modosteady solves a variety of in-the-field stabilization problems.
Built of sturdy-feeling hard plastic and rubber, the 15.5-ounce Modosteady can unfold from a compact 7.5 inches long by 3.5 inches wide by 4.0 inches tall, crammable into a medium-size camera bag compartment (top), to about 19.5 inches when fully extended (bottom). The four-position armature joints are held together by heavy-duty metal screws.
The reason I went with this one is that it is a 3-in-1 object. It has shoulder support, a stabilizer bar, and table-top support. By having all three different functions in the same gadget, it makes it simple to keep your videos steady no matter when or where you’re attempting to shoot video.
In case you want some type of stablizier for your usage, consider getting the Manfrotto Modosteady.

Even after all these years, I still enjoy reading - and writing for - CPU Magazine. I’ve been working with them since the beginning, back in 2001. CPU Magazine is really geared towards GearHeads. There are reviews about software and hardware, and you can even find the occasional benchmark test. When is the last time you picked one up? If it’s been awhile, why not use a discount and order yourself a subscription for the new year?
The news in the magazine may be a little out-of-date, but I don’t really read it for the news. I read it for the excellent articles you can find every month. I don’t read my article, of course, since I wrote it! I wanted to do a video about CPU Magazine because many of the questions you all ask me on a daily basis could honestly be answered if you were subscribed to this magazine. Things like “What’s the best OS?” and “What RAM should I buy?” can be found each and every month in CPU Magazine.
I swear that the most common question in my live chat room is “What’s the best video card to buy?!”. Well guess what? This month’s issue of CPU Magazine covers the answer to that very conundrum.
Paper isn’t dead yet, so why not order it today? I know that if enough of you are out there who want a subscription, I can probably get all of you a discount. I can’t promise anything, but if enough of you email me your interest, I will forward it to my editor and see what I can do.

Wicket and Pixie are back, and this time - they’re sporting LED Magnetic Digital Graffiti from ThinkGeek! It’s electronic tagging for the masses! Ponzi and I hate sending them out to potty at night, because we can never see or find them. Now with these little gizmos hooked to their collars, we don’t have to worry about it anymore!
Times have changed since you got caught for doodling that cute girl’s name on your desk in elementary school. Now you can mark your territory in a non-permanent electronic fashion with the LED Magnetic Digital Graffiti. This set of 20 different LEDs each has a battery and a magnet attached. Pull the tab to activate, then toss them on any ferrous metal surface… they stick and glow brightly announcing to everyone in the vicinity that you were indeed there. But make sure you stick the LED Magnetic Digital Graffiti on stuff you own, or are able to remove them later… because gone are the days when you can post funny battery powered LED signs all over Boston and get away with it.
These lights are so bright, the dogs can see where they’re going - not that they care, of course. I’m sure ThinkGeek didn’t have this in mind when they created these lights. But, they stick to anything magnetic, including dog collars!!
What interesting and unique ways can you use these lights? You get 20 of these for only about $10.00, so you have no reason not to make your world glow!

What time is it during the recording of this video? According to the time we set it, it was 11:02pm according to my Tix clocks. However, according to my Epoch Clock it’s 11:03! At the moment, I had it showing roman numerals. I then changed it to hexidecimal, and then octal! How completely awesome is this?!
Want to show the rest of the world that your brain is a cut above the rest? Well, with the ThinkGeek Epoch Clock, you are able to impress geeks with your ability to read binary numbering systems in a flash, while the rest of the room try to figure out just what is that strange looking device trying to say.
It can sit on your desk or nightstand, and even has a USB port that you can use to charge other gadgets. It powers via a power cord. However, there are batteries in there in case you lose electricity, or have to unplug it.
This is likely the Geekiest clock in the World. I have always thought the Tix clocks were Geeky… but the Epoch Clock takes the cake! Come on… you gotta love this.
According to a viewer (Tony), there is a Roman Numeral for zero:
About a question you posed: in Roman Numerals, zero is written with a letter ‘N.’ This is because it comes from the word “Nulla.” In Britain, up until a few years ago, most people were taught basic Latin phrases in lessons - as our language stems from it. I don’t know how it works in America, but in Britain you can still buy analogue clocks that in place of the “1 2 3 4 5 6″ have “I II III IV V VI.” I have one on my wall - I never thought that it would be such a big deal. It actually comes natural to me. But, I suppose in America, it would be hard to get hold of such a clock.
Not really. Plus, we love anything that has a USB cable attached to it… :)

I am a USB addict, that’s a well-known fact. I have so many devices, I have to keep a handful of USB hubs on my desk at all times. I also happen to be a Star Wars fanatic, as well. What if I could mix the two together?! Well, I am now the very proud owner of a Darth Vader USB Hub from my friends at ThinkGeek!!!!
When we were just younglings, that breathy evil space-samurai used to give us nightmares. Now, though, Lucas has turned him into a simple misunderstood uberjedi with a few mechanical upgrades. Still, that lovable 7 foot-tall misanthrope is the coolest Jedi ever, and it was about time we turned him into a USB Hub.
480 MBps of digital connectivity in a simple four-port USB 2.0 hub sits on your desk, just oozing sithy malevolence. Plug in your flash drives, scanners, and other devices, and he’ll frighten you with those iron-lungs of his.
I am literally the coolest kid on my block! Heck, I’m probably the coolest one in all of Seattle! This thing is simple to operate, just plug it in and you’re off. The USB connecting cable is permanently attached, which is great. I’ll never lose it!
It just doesn’t get any Geekier than this. I am one happy dude tonight.

Have you ever seen a USB device catch fire? I have, sort of. I was able to do it on the first try! It’s this cool new combo flash drive and lighter! The USB 8GB Flash Drive Lighter from the folks at ThinkGeek is available for about $50.00.
Electronics and fire have never been friends and you could even say they are essentially sworn enemies. But in the case of this USB flash drive they have decided to call a truce. Long standing differences have been put aside to create a product that is both practical and very unique.
This flash drive has an ample 8GB capacity and the lighter is refillable. The USB connector slides out of the bottom of the metal case, using a small slider lever located on the side of the lighter. The lighter has a polished chrome finish and an adjustable flame.
Features of this wonderful little gadget include:
You just never know when you may need a lighter - even in an emergency. And, of course, no self-proclaimed Geek would ever leave home without a USB flash drive!

We did it! Congratulations to everyone in the community! We have officially hit 50,000 subscribers on YouTube!! Thank you so much for following what we do. I know we may not always see eye-to-eye, but it’s still great to have that interaction.
I accept all video responses that come in, and try to answer any questions submitted via video as I can. It’s so great to have people using that medium to ask their questions. Recording a video question is good, because it allows you to explain yourself better than if you simply typed out an email to me. I’ve recorded my own responses to videos, as well.
I hope that over the course of the next 50,000 subscribers that the community will become more tight-knit. I do want to point out one thing that many of you may not realize: we now have more subscribers than Oprah! She is richer than God… but I have more YouTube subscribers! She could stomp me like a bug, I know. But still… how cool is that?
I don’t see YouTube disappearing, and I know it will continue to grow. I want to thank everyone at YouTube for making this possible, and of course I need to thank all of you - the community! None of this would have been possible without each and every one of you.

If you’ve seen random clips from my live stream (such as outtakes) floating around YouTube, they were probably done by UncleJohn. Tonight in our GoToMeeting session, UncleJohn demonstrated muvee, which is what he uses to put these clips together for all of you. By the way, you can get a special trial just by following my link.
Do you hear that beautiful silence? The old background noise in my office is now gone. It was coming from a fan inside my UPS, and drove me crazy. I realized I needed something quieter, so went and found an excellent one! A UPS is used when you have machines that you just cannot afford to have go offline in the event of a power outage. Plug your computer and other devices into the UPS, and it will keep them running for you when your electricity is not.
The Back-UPS ES offers APC’s best value for protecting your home and home office computer systems. It provides battery backup power that allows you to work through short and medium length power outages. It also safeguards your equipment from damaging surges and spikes that travel along your utility and phone lines. Award-winning software automatically shuts down your computer system in the event of an extended power outage. Additional features like audible alarms, an LED status indicator, user replaceable battery, push-button circuit breakers and transformer-block spaced outlets make the Back-UPS ES the perfect unit to protect your productivity from the constant threat of power outages and lost data.
This has ten outlets in it, and it’s completely quiet. This is a new series from APC that is greener. Certain outlets will stop pushing electricity to devices that aren’t using it. It can save you money on your electric bill! We have a few of these UPS devices around the house, to help cut our energy costs with gadgets and appliances that we don’t necessarily use that often. I’m very appreciative that APC has thought of this, and are helping us to save money!

I love using it when I have small clips like from a vacation trip, and want to mash them up into one nice little movie clip. It takes about ten minutes to assemble and create a video, so you don’t have to spend a ton of time on this.
Remember to check out both muvee and GoToMeeting. Both of these programs can increase your productivity, and save you time. It’s always good anytime you can make your life easier.

Pixie wanted me to use the digital luggage scale on her. I keep telling her it’s not made for doggies, but she’s stubborn. This little thing can save me quite a lot of money, and help keep me from incurring overweight luggage fees. The Digital Luggage Scale from ThinkGeek is a very handy little tool, and well worth the $20.00 it will cost you!
Air travel is already stressful enough without having to worry about extra charges for heavy luggage. The cost of a flight is insanely high these days, and airlines are charging you fees for anything and everything they can think of. Why let them eat you alive in overweight baggage costs, too?
The Digital Luggage Scale allows you to pack smarter and avoid paying those overweight luggage fees. It has a simply-to-read display with digital numbers on it, and will weigh up to 100 pounds. All you have to do is clip the handle to your suitcase handle, and then lift it. The scale will tell you how much the bag weighs. It’s a very small gadget, so it’s easy to keep with you when you travel.
Use these ThinkGeek coupons to save even more on the Digital Luggage Scale:
